My Sources of Information
Me at age four with three of the puppies from a litter
I was lucky enough to be raised in an environment with golden retrievers. My mother was a breeder of American Kennel Club golden retrievers as well as a trainer. I have also been fortunate to have a family friend, Amy Fields, who is a veterinarian that helps my family with any issues we run in to with our dogs.
The basis of my research started with personal experience, but it was expanded upon with various websites that are found below. I started out with the American Kennel Club and broadened my research base from there. I was particularly interested in the Golden Retriever Club of America, and their website led me to various organizations in the Pennsylvania area.
Before this project, I knew very little about adoption of golden retrievers and what kind of commitment a dog really can be. Through the research I performed, I was given a better understanding about how golden retrievers act and how their actions are a direct reflection of their surroundings and training habits. I was shocked to learn that about 10,000 golden retrievers end up in GRCA operated adoption agencies every year. Those are just the dogs fortunate enough to put into those agencies. Many are used and abused in puppy mills, which are basically places where dogs are forced to be bred so the puppies can be sold to pet stores. The dogs are forced to live in wire cages and in their own filth.
This research helped me understand that not all people are as welcoming to animals as I am, and not all dogs are as fortunate as mine, who are to be able to snuggle in the bed with me at night. I want this site to be informative and educational so that people know they are getting into instead of going into things blindly.
